About Us

A bright Montessori classroom with low wooden shelves, tables, and carefully arranged learning materials.

Established in 1962, Washington Montessori Institute is the first and oldest Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) training center in the United States. More than 3,000 Montessori teachers have completed their diploma training here.

We are accredited by AMI, the organization Dr. Maria Montessori founded in 1929 to protect the integrity of the method, and we hold MACTE (opens in a new tab) accredited status for our teacher education courses through 2031.

Our work is adult education: diploma courses at 0–3, 3–6, and 6–12; shorter orientation courses; workshops; school consultation; and mentorship. We also exist to widen access — to public, charter, and private schools, and to the adults who want this training.

Our Mission

The mission of WMI is to prepare adults to serve children in all aspects of development. Our comprehensive Association Montessori Internationale training offers students the transformative experience of becoming authentic Montessori teachers. WMI strives to bring access to Montessori to more schools and communities who want to learn about this powerful and respectful approach to human development.
